In the past, most alarm systems that people had installed were bell-only alarm systems, e.g. they made a noise. Their main function was to scare people away and act as a deterrent to the opportunist burglar. These then developed into dialler systems which would call your telephone number with an automated recording to let you know as and when your alarm went off.
