That day changed my life. At the time I was global head of product marketing in the software & services division of Nokia. Then Steve Jobs took to the stage in California, reinvented the mobile phone and changed the world. In an instant Nokia had gone from an innovative leader with a 52% market share to outdated dinosaur.
We struggled on for a couple of years, but ultimately my division and over 15,000 of my fellow Nokians were made redundant. On top of that, the share price (and all our share options) plummeted from $40 to $9 before the company was eventually sold to Microsoft for a song. I did what so many ex-executives do in these situations - I took my pay-off and built a recording studio in the garden.
