Explore Nidderdale's History Today
Established in 1975, Nidderdale Museum was founded by a group of passionate individuals dedicated to preserving the traditional way of life in Nidderdale, which was rapidly disappearing after the Second World War. Our museum, housed in the historic Old Workhouse building since 1975, showcases thousands of artefacts spanning 200 years of local history, displayed in authentic settings such as the Victorian Parlour, schoolroom, and cobblers shop. We are operated entirely by volunteers, who were recognised in 2010 with a Harrogate Volunteering Oscar Special Award and received the Queens Award for Voluntary Service in 2017. As a fully accredited museum under the Arts Council England scheme since 2023, we provide a unique resource for family history research, educational programmes for school groups, and interactive experiences like our Victorian Parlour Escape Room.

Our collection includes over 1,000 items related to leisure, agriculture, industry, religion, transport, and costume, alongside a continuous film detailing the construction of local reservoirs. We offer a welcoming environment for tourists and locals alike, with accessible facilities and a souvenir shop selling local history publications. Our governance transitioned to a Charitable Incorporated Organisation (CIO) in 2022, ensuring reduced liability for trustees while maintaining our commitment to preserving Nidderdales heritage. With 200 members supporting our mission, we continue to evolve while staying true to our founding principles of community engagement and historical preservation.
