The term Chiropractic stems from the greek words: "chiro" meaning hand and "practic" meaning practice. Throughout history prominent healers have understood a relationship between health and the condition of the spine, Hippocrates, for example, advised "Get knowledge of the spine, for this is the requisite for many diseases".
Chiropractic, as a healthcare profession, was founded in 1895 by Daniel David (DD) Palmer. He described his first spinal adjustment on a deaf janitor to whom he restored hearing after one adjustment of the upper spine. He then went on to use spinal adjustments to help with a variety of complaints and concluded that their effectiveness was based on eliminating nerve interference that was causing the patient's complaint.
