Max David Engel qualified as a solicitor in 1938. He set up an office in London but within a year the war broke out and he volunteered for service in the RAF. He won his pilot's wings and became a flight lieutenant. The winds of war eventually blew him and his family towards Northampton, where he met a local solicitor Bunny Douglas, and joined his practice for a time before setting up on his own in 1949 in an attic off the Market Square.

The process of dealing with the affairs of someone who has died is the administration of their estate. Most commonly, where the deceased left a Will, this will involve taking out Probate which is the evidence of the Executors' authority to deal with the deceased's assets and liabilities. If the deceased did not leave a valid Will, their estate will be dealt with according to the Intestacy Rules.
