Roots Farm Shop & Cafe | Yorkshire's Local Food Destination
Established in 2008, Roots Farm Shop, Butchery & Cafe represents the third generation of farming on this 220-acre mixed arable and beef farm in North Yorkshire. We are driven by a commitment to connect communities with sustainable farming practices, offering ethically sourced, locally produced food that reflects our dedication to quality and animal welfare. Our farm-to-table approach ensures full traceability of products, from our grass-fed beef reared on Home Farm to carefully selected regional produce. By employing 35 local staff and supporting Yorkshire-based suppliers, we strengthen the local economy while promoting regenerative agriculture principles. Our Victorian barns, designed by Arts & Crafts architect Philip Webb, provide a unique setting for our cafe, farm shop, and gift shop, creating a destination that combines heritage with modern sustainability.Through initiatives like Roots Weaving workshops, we aim to preserve traditional skills while educating visitors about ethical farming. The cafe serves breakfast, lunch, and homemade cakes daily, using ingredients directly from our butchery and local producers. Our gift shop, Roots Curiosities, showcases locally crafted items that embody our commitment to community and sustainability. Regular customer interaction with farmers and staff fosters transparency and trust, while our regenerative farming practices demonstrate environmental stewardship. This holistic approach has cultivated a loyal customer base from Teesside, Darlington, and across Yorkshire, all seeking authentic, sustainable food experiences.

Disappointed with the sausage butties , cold sausage and really cheap buns - coffee ok and good service from the team, happy to pay for good quality, but unimpressed to pay 4.50 for essentially a basic sausage bun.

It was worth the 10 mile diversion (caused by a closed road) for their Three Burger Slider meal for lunch. Delicious.

Called at Roots yesterday, bought 4 steaks and they were the best steaks I’ve ever had ! The new potatoes were delicious and I also bought a lovely bunch of hand picked flowers. Not the cheapest but most definitely the best , at the end of the day you get what you pay for .
