Past Exhibitions
Report
Our exhibition in 2018 marked the 100th Anniversary of the ending of the 1st World War. We looked at the stories of local men and women who served in the forces and we examined how life was for those who stayed at home in Dollar.

On the home front, the Dollar community supported the war effort in many ways: for example, work parties knitted thousands of socks and other comforts for the troops, vegetables were grown for the Fleet, sphagnum moss was collected in the Ochils, and Belgian refugees and local troops were given hospitality.Summer Time, rationing, watering of beer and banning of penny buns were endured.
Family History
Report
Many people have a keen interest in family history (genealogy) and tracing their family roots. Dollar Museum holds a range of materials which may be of use to those researching their past. Our most useful source is the History of Dollar by Bruce Baillie which is well indexed.

We have 19th century Reminiscences of Dollar by George Lawson, Rev. John C. Stewart, William Gibson, John Tait and Peter Porteus These works have been indexed by people and places. We have a small number of Baptism, Marriage and Burial records. We hold copies of some title deeds to properties, business records and also a number of books and reference works.
Robert Burns
Report
Harviestoun was owned by John Tait. When Tait's wife died, her sister Mrs Hamilton and family, including the attractive Charlotte Hamilton, came to keep house for him. Burns was a friend of Mrs Hamilton's step-son Gavin Hamilton, a lawyer in Ayrshire, and it was this connection that led Burns to visit Dollar.
