Our History: For Over a Century

Based in Blackburn, Broomfield House was built in 1874 and purchased by William Gregson Alty in 1911. Wm. Alty & Sons Funeral Services was then founded in 1915. Not far from our Higher Walton funeral home, William Gregson Alty began his working life on Gregson Farm in Brindle.
Soon after he would take local residents of Blackburn for a weekend away at the countryside, using his horse drawn carriage for several purposes whilst he was a coal merchant.After humble beginnings, William Alty offered penny funerals for the poorer residents of the local Witton area with his horse drawn vehicle.

What to Do When a Loved One Passes

The Medical Certificate of Cause of Death from the surgery, hospital or coroner is emailed directly through to the registrars office. The registrar will then contact the next of kin by telephone and go through the registration process. Following this, they will post any copies of the death certificate to the next of kin, which will be 11 each.

Regardless of when the funeral may be needed, we guarantee to provide our service at today's prices. If you move away, you can transfer your funeral plan through a network of professional firms across the UK. Your payment can be tailored to what suits you, with a once-only payment or by instalments.

To arrange the funeral, we can come to your home address. Otherwise, you can visit one of our offices at Broomfield House (Blackburn) or Bridge House (Preston). The registration procedure, and the documents you will needed for this, will be explained to you thoroughly. We will bring the person who has passed away into our care within a 30 mile radius, 24 hours, 7 days a week.*.

As we have our own on-site coffin workshop, all coffins can be customised to fit your own individual preferences, whether that's something simple or more bespoke.
