Your Gateway to Ripon's Rich Heritage
Established in 1982 by a dedicated group of volunteers, Ripon Museums has grown into a vital cultural institution preserving and sharing the region's heritage. Our team of professional staff and over 100 passionate volunteers work collaboratively to maintain three unique museums: the Workhouse Museum, Prison & Police Museum, and Courthouse Museum. Through our extensive collections and immersive exhibitions, we explore profound themes of social justice, equality, and human rights, aiming to inspire compassionate and active citizenship.

We prioritise community engagement through educational programs, outreach initiatives, and volunteer opportunities that enrich lives and foster wellbeing. With Arts Council National Portfolio Organisation status since 2018, we continue expanding our impact while maintaining the authenticity of our historic sites and collections.

The museums are well worth a visit. We did our first Ripon Ghost Walk on Halloween night. Walk was most informative, the tour guides were very good. The walk was easy to book online beforehand. About 30 people attended our walk. Definitely recommend.

Only had chance to visit the workhouse as didnt find out till too late that the other 2 don't open till 1 pm. It took ages to find the workhouse from the police museum, as didn't know you could park outside if disabled. it was really interesting, the best workhouse museum I've been to. The staff were very helpful too.
