History
Report
The International college of Oriental Medicine was founded by Dr. J.D. van Buren in 1972. The College was originally formed in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire but, as it expanded, a new building was found in East Grinstead, Sussex, in 1977. Already an osteopath, naturopath and a homeopath, Dr. van Buren began to study acupuncture in 1952, travelling to many different countries to gain as much knowledge as possible.

Acupuncture training at ICOM has much to offer prospective students. The College covers Classical acupuncture theory in great depth and has become renowned for its exploration of the theory of Stems and Branches. The Acupuncture programme at ICOM gives our students the opportunity to study Chinese Medicine, its philosophy and clinical applications, in the greatest possible depth at undergraduate level. We are now delivering a significant proportion of our lectures online, with lectures in person at the college for practical sessions.
Yin yang theory
Report
Yin Yang are the two the most fundamental concepts of East Asian culture and pervade extensively the entire corpus of Chinese Medicine. Although there are several different ways of interpreting yin yang, their Chinese characters are generally described as portraying the sunny (yang) side and and the shady (yin) side of an hill.
Five elements theory
Report
Five elements theory is sometimes known as the Five Phases. Five Elements theory is one of the most important systems of Chinese medicine. It underpins medical theory and serves as one of the major diagnostic and treatment protocols. In clinical practice the five elements theory is used in varying degrees depending on the practitioner, however, here at ICOM it is taught extensively throughout all three years of our acupuncture training.
