Services
Regulating
Report
Old mechanical watches are susceptible to environmental changes and positioning. From time to time adjustment may be necessary. The Images below show 3 variations of the Bosley type regulator which are common in watches after 1820's and a Thompion type regulator seen on earlier movements. To adjust the Bosley type regulator, use the tip of your finger to move the regulator left or right.
Case Types
Report
The open face pocket watch has is the most common type found: the above example dating from the late 19th century. The bezel is opened by sliding your thumb nail in the gap at approximately one o'clock, there is usually a lip to aid opening. They can be quite stiff to open (I have broken many nails), so sometimes a knife placed in the slot and twisted slightly is a good method (of course being careful not to damage the case).
Setting Hands
Report
After opening the glass / bezel you will see that the center of the hands / arbour has a square end, insert your winding key here and turn the hands clockwise. With top wind pin set watches there is no need to open the bezel. Just press the pin situated to the side of the winding crown with your finger nail and at the same time turn the crown clockwise to set the hands.
Care And Maintenance
Report
Tarnish can be removed from the watch case with a proprietary silver or metal cleaner depending on the type of metal refer to the cleaning products instructions. If you wish to clean the dial, be very careful not to touch the hands as they can be easily broken wipe with a dry cloth or a soft brush.
