Hon's student at Wolverhampton Polytechnic he took a summer job as a garage door fitter. Having previously been a furniture maker he had the basic skills.
Four months later, when 3rd year studies began, he carried on doing garage doors from the boot and roof of his Fiat 127 in order to make ends meet. Graduation, 6 months teaching in Siberia, getting married and getting a teaching job did not hamper his side line of garage doors.
