I have been surrounded by oriental rugs since the day I was born (though I don't think I was actually born on a stack of rugs). As a child I was lucky enough to be taken to Turkey on holiday long before it was a key tourist destination, and all I wanted to do was swim in the pool or play on the beach.
Was I allowed to do this? No! I was taken to the carpet bazaars, the archaeology sites and the carpet museums. I had no appreciation of rugs for many years and thought that I wanted a career in catering but when my father needed a major spine operation, I saw them in a very different light and had a complete change of heart.

It is about colour, design and texture, all of which are in our beautiful Oriental rugs. We are the rug specialists, with hand made rugs from Afghan weavers producing pieces which are often taken from old designs, particularly the Zieglers, Kazaks and Aryanas. Persian tribal pieces from Qashqai nomads, or village pieces from Iran with traditional designs and exotic colours.

The beauty of a rug with a central medallion design will be lost if it's placed under a coffee table or dining table. For these areas, it may be better to choose a rug with an all over design or an interesting border. You will rarely find a matching pair of hand- made rugs so if you want more than one in a room, choose rugs that are complementary.

Regularly vacuum your rug taking great care to avoid the fringes at the ends. They are an integral part of a hand-made rug and can get damaged so vacuum rug ends across the width, steering clear of the fringe. General weekly vacuuming will help prevent small particles from working their way into the pile of the rug and abrading the knots at the base.
