What to dowhen someone dies

We appreciate that it may be difficult or too soon for you to make decisions or simply take in information in the early stages of bereavement. Should you require any further information or have any questions please do not hesitate to contact us on 0115 9325469. If the death occurs while the person is in their home you should first telephone the medical practice of the person who has passed away.
Registeringa death
Report
A death should normally be registered within 5 days. You will first need to contact the deceased's GP or the Bereavement Office at the hospital for an appointment to collect the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death. You will then be able to contact the Register Office in the district where death occurred to make an appointment to register the death.
H.M. Coroner
Report
If the death was sudden, unexpected or if the deceased had not seen the doctor in the last 14 days, the death could be referred to the Coroner. In some cases the GP or hospital doctor may be granted permission by the Coroner to issue the death certificate and the Coroner may decide that a post mortem is necessary to establish a cause of death.

When you register the death the registrar will advise if the service is available in your area. The Registrar will give you a phone number and a unique reference number to use the 'Tell Us Once' service online or by telephone. The name, address and contact details of the person or company dealing with their estate i.e. the executor or administrator.
