Self Catering Holiday Cottages in Newton Stewart
Nestled in the tranquil countryside of Dumfries & Galloway, The Nether Barr has transformed a historic 19th-century stone courtyard into six self-catering holiday cottages. Our property, originally part of a farm owned by the Earl of Galloway, combines heritage charm with modern comforts. Situated on 15 acres of farmland with panoramic views of the Galloway Hills, we provide a peaceful retreat while remaining conveniently close to Newton Stewart and Galloway Forest Park. Each cottage is individually designed to preserve the building's natural character, featuring fully equipped kitchens, open-plan living spaces, and amenities tailored for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

We prioritise accessibility to local attractions, including mountain biking trails at Kirroughtree and Glentrool, walking routes to nearby peaks, and cultural sites like Wigtown Book Town. Our commitment to guest comfort includes complimentary linen, Wi-Fi, and a dedicated bike storage shed. With flexible booking options for short breaks and pet-friendly accommodations, we aim to make your stay both memorable and hassle-free.

Our six self-catering cottages offer 'home from home' comfort in a historic stone courtyard. Each unit features open-plan living areas, fully equipped kitchens, and modern bathrooms. Guests enjoy access to 15 acres of farmland and scenic walking paths. The cottages sleep between 2 and 6 people, making them ideal for families, couples, or solo travelers seeking a Scottish countryside retreat.
Pet-Friendly Accommodation
We welcome one well-behaved pet per cottage with prior arrangement, charging a 15 supplement. Additional pets may be accepted at the owner's discretion. Dogs must remain on leads within the property grounds. This service caters to guests who wish to explore Galloway's outdoor attractions with their pets, offering a convenient base near walking trails and rural landscapes.
Mountain Biking Facilities
A dedicated bike shed provides secure storage for mountain bikes, with an outdoor hose for cleaning equipment. Located near Kirroughtree and Glentrool's 7 Stanes trails, our property supports cyclists with easy access to Scotland's premier mountain biking routes. This service benefits guests planning multi-day cycling adventures in Galloway Forest Park.
Short Break Rentals
We offer short-term rentals throughout the year, with minimum three-night stays during high season. This service accommodates guests seeking weekend getaways or mid-week breaks, particularly popular with visitors attending local events like the Newton Stewart Walking Festival or Wigtown Book Town activities.
Family-Friendly Units
Larger cottages like The Byre and The Dairy feature multiple bedrooms and family-friendly layouts. These units include Z-beds for additional sleeping capacity and have DVD libraries with board games. The courtyard setting provides safe outdoor space for children, with nearby walking paths suitable for family exploration.

Lovely place to stay with 2 dogs. Nothing too much trouble and everything you needed for a week's stay. Just the small things like washing and dishwasher tablets, and tea coffee and sugar make life so much easier on arrival. Lovely comfy bed with amazing views all round, a safe shed to put our bikes in and a lovely paddock to walk the dogs. Excellent
