Shetland Vets
Shetland Vets (previously Westside Vets) has three surgeries in the Shetland Islands, at Bixter, Scalloway and Lerwick. We provide a friendly and professional service to animals and their owners. We are proud to be a full service Veterinary Practice, treating the wide variety of animals who live here.

Under the Guidelines set by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons, we provide a 24 hour emergency service to clients of the Practice, and also for visitors to the Isles. Our practice team includes six Veterinary Surgeons, four qualified Veterinary Nurses, our Accounts Administrator, Practice Administrator and a friendly and well-informed Reception Team.

About us
Report
Kaye and Juliet with a Westie The Practice was started by Jim & Juliet Nicolson in 1985, working from the Garage showroom at Bixter, trading as Westside Veterinary Surgery. In 1992, our own Surgery was built, and Bixter is still the administrative centre for the Practice.

By 2000, the surgery and staff were at capacity, and we decided to open a Branch in a central location, which would be more convenient for clients in the central and south Mainland. We wanted the same easy access and parking which we were all used to at Bixter, so we found an unused SIC building at Blydoit, Scalloway.
Pets
Report
Pet accessories including baskets, collars and leads, bowls and litter trays and much more. Pets are seen by appointment and our clinical records are fully computerised and accessible from both surgeries. This means that clients can use either surgery, in the knowledge that their pet's full history is available to the vet 24 hours.
Pet Insurance
Report
We never want money to be an issue should your pet require treatment but there is also no doubt that the provision of high quality veterinary care can be costly. We hope your pet stays in good health but, ask yourself, could you afford an unexpected veterinary bill of 2000? In the absence of a Pet National Health Service, lifelong pet insurance may offer the best solution for pet owners.
Unst, Yell & Outer Isles
Report
This is a service we have provided since 1986 with only a few cancellations due to adverse weather conditions! Whalsay visits are usually arranged on a monthly basis and we visit several of the other outer isles as and when necessary. The vet consults at the Baltasound Hall from approximately 10.40am to 11.40am on Thursdays, and then visits any farm animals or horses needing attention.
Work for us
Report
We have a full time vacancy for maternity cover for a Veterinary Nurse to join our team at Shetland Vets. You can find the details about the Veterinary Nurse position and please do not hesitate to get in touch to discuss this further. We are always keen to hear from Vets who may be interested in working in Shetland in the future, either on a permanent or Locum basis.
