George Nicolson's are a second generation family business. Joint Managing Directors, Barrie and Ewan Nicolson, along with Director, Jeremy Tempest-Mitchell, as well as several other key members of staff joined the business over 20 years ago. We also have a small group of shareholders who are employees of the business.
The business was started in 1972 by George Nicolson with nothing more than a garage lock up, a friend who was a painter & decorator and the will to succeed. Having moved premises a few times, the company settled in their current offices at Salamander Street, Leith in 1991. Throughout this time the business has grown steadily.

Having been established for over 45 years, George Nicolson are a second generation family business whose main markets within painting and decorating are retail, commercial, leisure and private housing. We have a management structure that is capable of organising and completing any type or size of decoration project.

Throughout the years, we have focused on the commercial painting sector through the banks, public houses, hotels and offices. We pride ourselves on the close working relationships we have built up directly with clients, contractors, designers, architects and surveyors alike.
These relationships have involved us working mainly within central belt Scotland, however over the years we have undertaken projects throughout the UK and Europe as well as in Turkey, South Africa and Israel.Over the past 15 years, we have extended out into main/principal contracting covering several markets such as hotels, restaurant, public houses and offices.

Residential
Report
In 2008, we acquired Henderson & Paterson, a well established residential painting and decorating contractor. This enabled us to operate further within the residential and private house painting and decorating markets. Henderson & Paterson Ltd were originally formed in 1932 and were a respected business in their own right.
Main Contracting
Report
As main contractor, we are responsible for control over the construction phase of the project where more than one subcontractor is involved. We plan, monitor, manage and co-ordinate health & safety for the entirety of the project. In close communication with the client, and principal designer as well as Quantity Surveyor where applicable, we hold an important role ensuring high standards are delivered, maintained and understood by all involved.

Over a number of years, George Nicolson have been very fortunate to have received awards for various aspects of our business. A number of these awards have been for our continued investment in training throughout our organisation and our approach to and support of our apprentices. We have also been nominated and won many awards for projects we have undertaken, as well as individuals receiving awards such as Contracts Manager of the Year.
