History
Report
Our magnificent Clubhouse was built in 1664 for John Shaw, banker to King Charles I, no expense was spared in its construction and we are fortunate that many of the splendid original features remain, including its elegant staircase, ornate ceilings and imposing fireplaces. Known as Eltham Lodge dating back to Tudor times when a previous building stood in the grounds to the magnificent Eltham Palace just 800 yards away.
Heritage
Report
The year is 1603. Queen Elizabeth I is dead and the Scottish King, James VI has ascended the throne as James I of England and Ireland, taking up residence at Greenwich Palace in London. As the predominantly Scottish court began to settle into life in London, its nobles wasted no time in searching for somewhere to play their beloved game - an exotic sport of which few outside Scotland had ever heard - golf.
Major Trophies
Report
As might be expected of a club with as long and as prestigious a heritage as Royal Blackheath, we are able to evidence our standing in the history of this royal and ancient game with an array of trophies and medals which is widely regarded as unparalleled in the world of golf. Originally the Gold Medal of the Knuckle Club, this is the oldest medal in the world, having been struck in 1789 and first competed for in 1792.
The Club House
Report
Before Royal Blackheath moved to Eltham, we had occupied a number of Clubhouses at different locations around Blackheath. Eltham land at pepper-corn rent with permission to build a new brick-built Lodge on it as his Residence. The Lodge is unique and is the forerunner for the later Georgian brick-built Gentlemen's houses.
