Who is "Made in Argyll"? My name is Janice Stewart, and many of you will know me through the knitwear I have been producing for years under the name of Phoenix Fabrics of Benderloch. I was part of the Pop Up Craft Shop in Oban in 2016 and enjoyed the experience very much. For some years I have been involved with other craft retail, and I felt it was time to branch out on my own.
When the premises beside the Olive Garden at the Railway Pier became available in 2017, it was clear it had great potential to fulfil the aim to bring diverse, quality crafts to Made In Argyll, available at affordable prices, to locals and visitors alike. The shop is growing from strength to strength, now home to many different artists and crafters, all of whom are from the Argyll area.

I tend to be an all round crafter who enjoys nothing more than trying out new crafts. My main passion is knitting. I first started knitting when I was 3 years old (Please do not ask how long ago that was). My dolls and teddies were the best dressed toys in the area! As most teenagers did I tried to follow fashion trends and adapt it to my own style, I suppose that is when I began adapting and creating my own patterns.

I wanted in the size or colour I wanted. I started making jewellery and quickly became excited to learn all the different techniques. I began to dabble in lots of different areas of jewellery making. My latest venture has been cement jewellery. My poor friends and family were the recipients of some pretty dodgy looking jewellery at the beginning of my jewellery making journey!

I've always been fascinated by textiles and how a piece of fabric can be transformed into an apron or yarn into a cosy jumper. Many people would love to be a bit more adventurous with their clothing than they are, socks are the perfect way to express yourself without needing to call attention to them if you're a little shy.
Maisie Emporium
Report
I am a textile artist and maker living in Oban. In my studio overlooking the bay I design and make under the branding Maisie's Emporium, using mainly upcycled, repurposed and sometimes found materials. I make small batches of useful and decorative items, as well as one off creations inspired by the materials themselves and the beauty of Argyll.
