Rising Damp is a result a capillary action i.e., the flow of water from the ground against gravity.

This is usually due to a lack of a physical damp-proof course [dpc]. The main sorts of fungal decay can be divided into two types, the so-called Wet Rots of which Cellar Fungus (Coniophora puteana) is the most widespread. A number of differing species have evolved, but, in this country, the most widespread by far and therefore the most important one to deal with is the common woodworm.

Report
The design of the waterproofing system should preferably be carried out by a C.S.S.W. (Certified Surveyor in Structural Waterproofing) who will work within the guidelines recommended by BS8102: 2009 'protection of structures against water from the ground' recommendations. Any work should be carried out by a PCA registered company.
Rising Damp
Report
Rising Damp is a result of a capillary action i.e., the flow of water from the ground against gravity. This is usually due to a lack of a physical damp-proof course (DPC). Where this occurs a damp zone usually extends to the whole length of the wall to a height of 500mm or more above skirting-board level.
Condensation & Ventilation
Report
There is always some moisture in the air, even if you cannot see it. If the air gets colder, it cannot hold all the moisture and tiny drops of water appear - the Dew Point. This is condensation. You also notice it when you see your breath on a cold day, or when the mirror mists over when you have a bath.
Wet Rot
Report
As the name implies, this type of fungus (which can develop in complete darkness) attacks timber which is in a permanently very damp or wet state. Commonly found in timbers that have become damp, wet rot cannot begin attacking wood unless there is a moisture content of at least 20% and, as a result, does not normally occur in internal timbers unless there is a significant dampness issue.
