We are a family business, started in 1983 by Steve Morrison who worked for the York music company Banks and Sons prior to this. Steve was a lifelong follower and performer of folk music in and around his home City of York. In 1983 he opened his first store in the city and has successfully traded ever since with the help of his wife Jude and his eldest son Miles.

Duet Concertinas

At Red Cow Music we offer a great selection of Duet concertina. The duet is available both in new models and used reconditioned instruments. We offer a great service online, but also offer a personal trail service at our showroom based in the Yorkshire countryside. The Duet Concertina is probably the hardest to play, but the most versatile.

I've been disappointed by the service compared to other specialist ukelele shops such as southern ukeleles and duke of ukes who are super helpful, friendly and professional.
On the phone they were rude.
When I asked them to put on strap buttons before sending out they made it a complicated process. They put the neck button centred rather than off-centre as other shops do which looks bad.
When I asked about the strings on the uke to get a spare set they gave me the wrong information (told me they were Aquila rather than Worth Browns) When I queried this they were curt rather than apologetic

Brilliant service from Steve. I called to discuss where I should switch from Anglo concertina to melodeon. Steve spent 10 minutes talking me out of spending more money! I ended up actually buying another Anglo - a Rochelle - which is way better (and - bizarrely - cheaper!) than the rubbish I paid £750 for from Macneela. Fabulous service - thrilled to bits.

My melodeon just arrived in Astoria, Oregon, USA from the UK, the outer box was a bit banged up, but the melodeon was packaged so well, it was absolutely fine! The melodeon is a sweet little thing, with a great sound. I am extremely happy with my purchase and would definitely do business with them again.

I went to see Steve at Red Cow, having chatted on the phone to discuss what I was looking for. I received a warm, friendly greeting in his lovely home, along with a welcome cup of tea. My instrument was ready and waiting and I had as much time as I wanted to play it and see if it was what I wanted. There was no pressure to buy at all.
Steve is very knowledgeable about his music and the instruments he sells. I bought an 8 string ukulele and am very pleased with it. It is very good quality and has a lovely sound. He is able to fit a strap and add a pick up for an amplifier.

100% happy with everything about my experience buying from Red Cow! They had the slightly obscure instrument I wanted at a truly excellent price. I ordered it one evening, it was shipped by courier first thing the next morning and arrived with me all the way in Scotland the day after that, sturdily boxed up and well protected from any bumps in transit. A wonderful music store with a particular focus on Folk music. The staff are helpful and do their best to ensure their customers are pleased, providing help finding the right instrument for them.
They have a very interesting stock of instruments, so even if you are not a musician yourself, it is worth a visit just to see and hear some of the curios.

I bought an Irish Bouzouki online which I had delivered. The instrument arrived broken. They agreed to refund me if I sent it back. However, their refund did not cover the initial delivery cost nor the return delivery cost, which they are legally obliged to do. They refused to discuss the matter with me and ignored all my emails. I spoke to the Retail Trade Ombudsman to help settle the matter, but they also refused to engage with them.

Steve, the owner of the shop, was extremely helpful and was able to source the model I wanted within three days. He spent some considerable time setting up the guitar to my own particular preferences and contacted me immediately it was ready.
I am delighted with the guitar; it really is a quality instrument and a joy to play, with a wonderful action and fabulous tone, plugged and unplugged.

Couldn't have asked for a friendlier assistant helping me today but a lovely Faith acoustic. It's clear Steve loves what he does and has the experience and knowledge to back it up. Couldn't be happier with my new guitar especially seeing as though it came with a great set up and gig bag! None of that usual music store awkwardness here. Very much encourages to get yourself in and have a play until you find which instrument is right for you. I will definitely be coming back for all my musical needs!

I popped into Red Cow music to enquire about a Yamaha guitarlele I had seen in the back of the shop. Speaking to the man behind the counter I found him to be incredibally rude and not much help at all. I simply enquired as to where he managed to get the guitarlele in from as I had struggled to locate one in the past. I was greeted with a sharp snotty response as if what I had ask him should have been obvious to me. Needless to say I will be making all my guitar purchases at Mor helpfull guitar retailers in York (you see what I did there) Sorry to say but you are a sanctimonious bell end.
