Cleverley and Spencer Stonemasons were established as a family business in 1869 and are still a small, independent, family stonemasons which is now run by Ivor Spencer who personally oversees the work on every headstone and memorial.
Ivor first took up his hammer and chisel at his father's knee at the age of six and since then has gone on to become one of only a handful of Stonemasons in England to be accepted as a member of both the National Association of Memorial Masons and the National Association of Master Letter Carvers.

A memorial is not merely a marker erected over a grave, it is a lasting symbol of remembrance and a final gift to someone dearly loved. We believe that only the finest sculpting and careful hand finishing of a memorial is appropriate so we insist on working to the highest standards. Every single letter of each hand carved inscription is carefully drawn by hand and painstakingly sculpted, with a hammer and chisel, by our highly trained craftsmen.

When choosing a headstone or cremation tablet to be placed within a churchyard consideration needs to be given to the rules and guidelines of the relevant diocese. These rules cover the size, type of stone, shape and time scales for the erection of a headstone or placing of a cremation tablet. Our staff are familiar with the churchyard regulations and the safety considerations.

Not only do Cleverley and Spencer create new memorials, we also believe that it is important to maintain and restore existing memorials. Renovations can be undertaken on most kinds of memorials no matter what the size from a basic cremation tablet to the most ornate of memorials. No work is undertaken until a fully itemised quote has been given and agreed with the client.
