Services
Schools
Report
Havering Music School provides a comprehensive tuition programme in most of the borough's schools. Full details of times, instruments and fees are available from the relevant school office. Lessons usually take place during the day and, in secondary schools, times are varied to avoid pupils missing the same class.
Music Centre
Report
A varied range of lessons and ensembles are available and students work to a timetable tailored to their individual needs, helping them reach the highest possible standard but with an emphasis on learning to play with other musicians. Students must be available to attend all morning, as timetables can change from term to term.
Instrument Loans
Report
Havering Music School's instrument loan scheme allows children taking lessons as part of the school's teaching provision to see whether playing is for them without the cost of buying an instrument up front. Electrical instruments, pianos and percussion instruments are not available for hire. Instruments need to be collected from the music school and signed for.
Learn
Report
Piano lessons (in pairs of students) are available at Weekday and Saturday Music Centre as a second study to a main instrument. There is also provision for keyboard and piano lessons in some schools. Students in Yr. 1 and 2 have a very limited range of instruments to choose from - Violin, Recorder and Fife are excellent choices of "age appropriate" instruments which can help lay the foundations of musical learning.
Exams
Report
Havering Music School teaches both the curriculum of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and Trinity College. Students take their graded examinations or diplomas at the Music Centre towards the end of each term. Students preparing for exams can be offered additional aural tuition.
Entry for an examination is dependant on the Music School receiving payment for the examination and a signed consent/entry form in line with our deadlines. Please note that not all children progress at the same rate and will only be entered for examination when their teacher is confident that they have reached the required standard.
