Grange Bakery is owned by Julia Sayburn and Paul Hughes who for 13 years ran the award-winning Howbarrow Farm organic box scheme. A chance encounter led them to purchase the bakery in 2007 when it was about to close after nearly 100 years of making bread in Grange Over Sands. Developing the local food economy and encouraging independant local shops is a passion for Paul and Julia.
They took on the challenge and now enjoy a thriving and growing business. The fine tradition of baking over the past 100 years continues in Paul and Julia's care. They continue to introduce new products, building on the popular multiseed and wholemeal loaves, baguettes and rolls, country grain bread and ciabattas made with extra-virgin olive oil.

The Oven
Report
The secret to our very tasty bread is an 80 year-old Edwardian gas-fired trap oven. Its brick-lining provides an all-round, strong, deep heat that bakes our bread perfectly. This oven replaced an earlier coke-fired one in the early 1930's. Apart from routine maintenance, the oven has been continuously baking bread, six days a week, for over 80 years.
