FAQ's
Report
In England and Wales, a notary is a type of lawyer who specialises in preparing and certifying documents for use in other jurisdictions. Companies may need to have documents notarised if, for example, they are opening a branch office or a bank account or appointing a representative in another country, buying or selling a ship or registered property, or submitting proof of residence for tax purposes.
Practice Areas
Report
The purpose of notarial certification is to verify or prove the execution of legal documents. Generally, this is required to enable particular documents to be accepted abroad by courts, registries and other notaries. The form of the notarial certificate varies substantially according to the document and the country in which it is to be used.
Legalisation
Report
Legalisation is the verification by the Consulate of the destination country or the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office of the signature and seal of the notary (or other public officer) on a document in order to evidence to the appropriate authorities in the destination country that the notary is indeed a notary.
Notarial Profession
Report
Notaries are specialised lawyers who prepare, authenticate and keep records of the due execution of legal documents. The office derives from Roman law and the Civil law tradition. In England and Wales, where solicitors and barristers form the predominant part of the legal profession, the particular function of notaries is to verify documents for use abroad.
